The F-101B was so different from other F-101 aircraft that McDonnell proposed a designation of F-109. It was first deployed in 1959 and production ceased in 1961. This model was fitted with a more powerful engine (the Pratt & Whitney J57-P-55), it was also a longer engine - thus the afterburner extended close to eight feet out of the fuselage. 479 aircraft of this model were produced.
