1,050 F-89’s were built, the F-89J cost slightly less than one million dollars. The F-89J model was not produced new but rather was a retrofit of previous models. In all, 350 F-89Js entered service. The F-89 had a maximum speed of 635 mph at 10,600 feet and had a service ceiling of 49,200 feet. This is the first aircraft that I am cognizant of, from 1958 to 1960 my father was stationed at Ladd Air Force Base, Fairbanks, Alaska. I was in the first, second, and third grades. Scorpions were stationed at the base and we were taken on school field trips to look at them, climb into the cockpit, walk under the wing, etc…...
