War Eagles Air Museum, Santa Teresa, New Mexico
At the start of the 2nd World War, the P-40 was the primary
fighter of the Army Air Corps. In general, it was not competitive
with the aircraft it flew against. This particular plane was part of
the 23rd Fighter Group in China. The 23rd was staffed in part by
members of the disbanded 1st American Volunteer Group (the Flying Tigers).
13,738 War Hawks were built, when incorporated into the British Commenwealth
and Soviet Air Forces the P-40B and P-40C models were called
Tomahawks. The name Kittyhawk was used for the P-40D models.
