Sikorsky H-03-S Dragonfly (1947-1957) Pima Air and Space Museum, Tucson, Arizona, USA February 21, 2008
The Navy used the H-03-S-1 to replace the seaplanes which were carried on large ships like cruisers and battleships. Seaplanes had to land on water and be hoisted aboard. It was not until 1948 that helicopters which could land and take-off from the deck of such ships began to replace the seaplanes. The H-03-S was the Navy version of the H-5. Since this is a Coast Guard aircraft its proper designation is likely to be H03S-1G, nine units of this version were built.
