Hawker Tempest II The Tempest II was the last piston-engined fighter to serve in the Royal Air Force. It was introduced into service in January 1944, 1,702 were built. The Tempest II had an operational range of 1,640 miles. Powered by the Centaurus IV engine (18 cylinder radial producing 2,520 hp) the Tempest II had a maximum speed of 442 mph at 15,200 feet and an operational ceiling of 37,500 feet.
